With that in the back of my mind when I had children, I knew I wanted to create traditions, that I hope will continue far into the
Every year I come up with something that I want to try and make as a new family tradition. My husband willingly goes along with my ideas and if they don’t work, we just don’t do them again. Something we have adopted more recently when it comes to gifts, is to be a sort of minimalist when it comes to our children. They get things that we hope they will use for a while (instead of toys they break in a day) and they don’t get a lot (in the sense of numbers). One reason is money, but the biggest reason is that we want our children to love and appreciate what they get, not tear it open say “Wow!” and move on to the next gift within seconds. Paper flying and suddenly… when they’re done they look at us and say “That’s it?”. I can honestly say that in the 10 years I have been a mother, I have not experienced the later. Every year, they open their small number of gifts with excitement and appreciation, which is always what I want to see.
This year, I read about a family that writes 10 things they are thankful or grateful for from the past year and before gifts are even opened, the writer reads aloud their list. So this will the new thing we will be trying this year. I actually really love this idea and hope it will be a keeper.
What are your family traditions? I would love read what others do, whether they are new or old. This is a great time of year to not only enjoy it with family but to share it with others.
Please leave a comment with your family traditions. I look forward to reading them!
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
